Piano Day

Piano Day is a global celebration observed annually on the 88th day of the year, symbolically chosen to match the number of keys on a piano. This event was initiated in 2015 by German pianist and composer Nils Frahm. The choice of March 29th, being the 88th day of the year, aligns whimsically with the standard piano keyboard’s 88 keys, adding a playful note to the occasion. Note that because this is a Leap Year, Piano Day is on March 28th!

The piano, whose invention is attributed to Bartolomeo Cristofori, an Italian maker of musical instruments, has become central to the world of music. The Piano was first called “clavicembalo col piano e forte.” This can be translated to “a harpsichord that can play soft and loud noises.” Eventually, its name was shortened to piano.

Since its inception, Piano Day has rapidly gained international recognition, with activities that celebrate the instrument’s rich musical heritage.

Each year, special concerts both onstage and online, dedicated radio shows, engaging podcasts, and specially curated playlists are organized. These events showcase the piano’s versatility and bring together pianists, composers, and enthusiasts from around the world to revel in the joy of piano music.

In honor of Piano Day, pianists across the globe host free concerts showcasing the enchanting sounds of piano music. This celebration also involves composers, performers, piano movers, tuners, and builders, each playing a vital role in the world of piano music.
