Balalaika Concert in Takoma Park, MD

September 8 @ 11:45 am - 12:30 pm

The Washington Balalaika Society was founded in 1988 by a group of Washington-area musicians interested in studying and performing the music of Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe on traditional Russian folk instruments including the balalaika, domra, bayan, gusli, and some wind and percussion instruments.

The Society’s initial membership of eight has grown to more than 50 and the WBS orchestra is now the largest of its kind in America, with musicians of all ages and at all levels from beginner to professional. We welcome experienced musicians who can read music and want to learn to play our instruments to join us.

The Orchestra presents more than a dozen concerts each year, including our annual Spring and Fall Series, as well as at festivals, parks, in concert series and at other public and private venues, and we’ve expanded our repertoire to include music of many cultures.

The WBS Orchestra currently has openings for string, wind and percussion instrument players, as well as vocalists. Musicians with some experience (though not necessarily with Russian instruments), and the ability to read music, are encouraged to contact us to find out about how you can get involved. A limited number of ‘loaner’ instruments are available, and lessons are offered on balalaika, domra and bayan. We also welcome folk interested in helping with publicity and management operations of the orchestra. We hope you enjoy our music and will consider joining us!

Please note:  MaryO will not be playing this concert!
